This Jeep Unlimited built by Volant isn't afraid to get wet.
What does it take to turn a stock Jeep Wrangler into a serious off-road contender? First, it takes the knowledge of knowing what you are doing and the accessories you are going to need to tackle serious trails. Tony Quezada of Volant Cool Air Intakes wanted to build such a vehicle and took a 2006 Jeep Wrangler and added a Fabtech coil-over suspension system that added six-inches of travel to the vehicle. This also allowed the use of a set of Toyo Open Country M/T Tires measuring 35x12.5-18 and are mounted to a set of American Racing Equipment 18-inch wheels.
But the suspension alone wasn't enough. Quezada also added a Warn 9.5 Ti winch and a set of Smittybilt bars that included a front light bar, rocker panel protectors and spare tire rack at the rear of the Jeep. The factory headlights were replaced with HID Delta Headlights and additional Delta off-road beams were added to the light bar.
Naturally, Quezada added some of Volant's components to the 4.0-liter engine. The most noticeable is the Volant Cool Air Intake Kit that allows additional air to flow into the engine. What is unique about this kit however, is the adaptation of the company's new Periscoop snorkel. This snorkel allows the Jeep to be almost fully submerged in water without the chance of stalling or taking in water through the intake system. In addition to the intake system, Quezada also added the Volant Exhaust stainless steel cat-back system that eliminates any backpressure from the factory system.
We rode with Quezada on a couple of trails and he soon discovered that he has some additional work to add to the Jeep to make it even better. He plans on adding some lower gears, an air-locking differential to take full advantage of the Jeep when he's on the trail.
